How the Medication Works

Our at-home abortion care uses two FDA-approved medications: Mifepristone and Misoprostol. These pills work together to safely end an early pregnancy.

Step 1: Mifepristone (Day 1)

You’ll first take Mifepristone, which blocks the hormone progesterone a hormone your body needs to sustain pregnancy. Without this hormone, the pregnancy cannot continue.

Step 2: Misoprostol (24–48 Hours Later)

Next, you’ll take Misoprostol, either buccally (in your cheeks) or vaginally, depending on your provider’s instructions. This medication causes your uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy similar to a heavy period.

What to Expect After Taking the Pills

Once you’ve taken the abortion pills — Mifepristone followed by Misoprostol — your body will begin the process of ending the pregnancy. Everyone’s experience is a little different, but here’s what you can generally expect in the hours and days that follow:

Within a Few Hours After Misoprostol

Cramping and Bleeding Begin

Most people start to experience heavy cramping and bleeding within 1 to 4 hours of taking Misoprostol. This is a sign that the medication is working.

Bleeding May Be Heavier Than a Normal Period

You may pass clots, including tissue from the pregnancy. The heaviest bleeding typically lasts for 4 to 6 hours.

Pain Relief Is Important

Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen can help manage discomfort. Avoid aspirin, as it can increase bleeding.

Other Side Effects

You may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chills, or fatigue. These side effects usually go away within a day.

Other Side Effects

Bleeding Slows Down

After the heaviest bleeding, you’ll likely continue to bleed or spot for 1 to 2 weeks. Some people may spot for up to a month.

Cramping Decreases

Cramping usually eases up after the pregnancy tissue has passed. Some mild cramping may continue for a few days.

Emotional Reactions

It’s normal to feel a range of emotions relief, sadness, or even uncertainty. Support is available if you need someone to talk to.
