Knowing what to expect visually can help reduce the anxiety of the process. In a medication abortion, the appearance of the tissue changes depending on how many weeks you are into the pregnancy.
At Serenity Choice, we want you to have accurate information so you can recognize when the process has successfully moved forward.
1. The Early Stages (4–7 Weeks)
At this stage, the pregnancy is very small, and you are unlikely to see a recognizable embryo.
-
The Gestational Sac: This is often the most recognizable part. It usually appears as a small, translucent, or white/grayish “bubble” or grape-like structure, often less than half an inch in size.
-
The Decidua: You will see dark red, thick, or liver-colored tissue. This is the uterine lining that was supporting the pregnancy.
-
What it looks like to you: Most patients describe it as a very heavy period with large blood clots. The pregnancy tissue is often tucked inside these clots and may not be visible unless you are looking closely.
2. Later Stages (8–10 Weeks)
As you approach the 9- or 10-week mark, the tissue becomes more defined.
-
Size: The gestational sac may be about the size of a large grape or a small plum.
-
Appearance: The tissue may look more “fibrous” or have a distinct white or pinkish color compared to the dark red blood clots.
-
Recognizability: While still very small (about 1 inch), some people may be able to recognize more defined shapes within the sac.
3. Tissue vs. Blood Clots
It can be difficult to tell the difference between the two, but here are the general traits:
-
Blood Clots: These are typically dark red or purple, have a jelly-like consistency, and will often break apart if pressed. It is normal to pass clots ranging from the size of a pea to the size of a lemon.
-
Pregnancy Tissue: This tends to be firmer than a blood clot. It often has a lighter color (white, gray, or tan) and a “spongy” or “membranous” texture that does not break apart as easily as blood.
Do You Need to Look?
No. You do not have to look at or examine the tissue unless you want to. Many patients prefer to simply use the toilet as they feel the urge to pass a clot.
-
Sign of Success: For our clinical team at Serenity Choice, the most important sign of success is that you felt something pass, followed by a noticeable decrease in your cramping and a gradual slowing of heavy bleeding.
