Vaginal misoprostol behaves differently from medication held inside the mouth.
The tablets gradually absorb after insertion, but they may not completely disappear.
Studies of vaginal misoprostol have found that tablet remnants can sometimes remain visible for several hours afterward.
This does not necessarily mean that the medication was not absorbed or that the abortion will fail.

Vomiting much earlier could potentially affect absorption.

Does Misoprostol Need to Fully Dissolve for It to Work?
No.
This is one of the most common points of confusion.
The goal is not necessarily for the tablet to completely disappear. The goal is for the medication to have enough time in contact with the appropriate tissue so it can be absorbed.
After buccal or sublingual use, chalky fragments may remain after 30 minutes.
After vaginal administration, tablet material may sometimes remain for hours.
Neither situation by itself proves that the abortion medication failed.
Does Faster Dissolving Mean the Pills Work Better?
No.
How quickly the physical tablet disappears is not a reliable measure of effectiveness.
One person’s tablets may become soft very quickly while another person’s remain partially intact.
Medication effectiveness depends much more on:
- Correct medication
- Correct dose
- Correct route
- Appropriate timing
- Pregnancy duration
- Following the prescribed regimen
Do not compare how quickly your pills dissolved with another person’s experience.
When Does Bleeding Start After the Pills Dissolve?
Bleeding does not necessarily begin the moment the tablets dissolve.
After misoprostol, cramping and bleeding often begin within the following hours, but the timing varies from person to person.
Some people start bleeding relatively quickly, while others take longer.
The fact that bleeding has not started immediately after the tablets dissolve does not automatically mean the medication failed.

What if Nothing Happens After the Pills Dissolve?

People respond differently to misoprostol.
Do not take additional doses simply because:
- The tablets dissolved quickly

How Can I Tell if the Abortion Pills Worked?
The physical disappearance of the tablets does not confirm abortion success.

- Cramping

- Passing clots or tissue
- Pregnancy symptoms gradually decreasing
However, follow-up may still be needed.
Depending on your circumstances, your provider may recommend symptom follow-up, a pregnancy test at the appropriate time, blood hCG testing, or an ultrasound.
