Yes, you can still access abortion pills even if you aren’t exactly sure how many weeks pregnant you are. At Serenity Choice Health, our clinical team will help you determine your “gestational age” during your consultation. We primarily use the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP) to calculate this. In Illinois, you are eligible for the abortion pill up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, and an ultrasound is not always required if your medical history and cycle dates are clear.
How We Determine Your Pregnancy Timeline
If you aren’t sure of your dates, don’t worry—this is very common. We use a standardized medical process to estimate how far along you are:
-
Last Menstrual Period (LMP): This is the most common method. We count the number of days from the first day of your last period to today.
-
Clinical Screening: During your Telehealth Abortion Care consultation, a licensed provider will ask specific questions about your symptoms (like morning sickness or breast tenderness) to help verify the timeline.
-
Pregnancy Calculator: You can even use the calculator on our In-Clinic Abortion Services page to get an estimate before your appointment.
What Happens if You Are Over the Limit?
At Serenity Choice Health, we offer the abortion pill up to 12 weeks.
-
Under 12 Weeks: You can choose between pills by mail or an in-person visit.
-
Over 12 Weeks: If our screening suggests you are past the 12-week mark, the abortion pill may be less effective. In these cases, we may recommend in-clinic abortion services (procedural abortion) to ensure the medication abortion process is completed safely and fully.
Why Timing Matters
The dosage and effectiveness of the medication can change slightly as a pregnancy progresses.
-
Effectiveness: The pills are about 95–98% effective in the first 9 weeks. Between 9 and 12 weeks, the success rate remains high, but you may experience more heavy bleeding and cramping and pain because there is more tissue for the body to expel.
-
Safety: Knowing your weeks helps us rule out risks like an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus), which requires different medical treatment.
