FAQs by Illinois Residents
What is medical abortion?

Medical abortion is the procedure of terminating a pregnancy with medicine. There are two drugs that are administered in succession. The first pill, mifepristone, ends the pregnancy, whereas the second pill, misoprostol, produces uterine contractions that permit the body to clear pregnancy tissue.

The abortion pill is highly successful. If you’re taking mifepristone with misoprostol, it will vary depending on which stage of your pregnancy is as well as how many pills of the medication you use. It works approximately 94-98% of the time for women who are 8 weeks or less pregnant. At 8-9 weeks pregnant, it works approximately 94-96% of the time.

The abortion pills are medicines that end an early pregnancy. It may normally taken for up to 11 weeks (77 days) after the first day of your last period. If you are more than 11 weeks pregnant, you will need an in-clinic abortion instead.

Yes. It is legal for qualifying patients who meet the state’s requirements.

You may feel strong period-like cramps. Pain can feel mild to severe and often lasts 3–8 hours. You can take pain medicine to help.

If you have a medical abortion, you may have side symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea. These adverse effects normally subside within three days. Bleeding is frequently more severe following a medicinal abortion than after a surgical abortion. The bleeding should decrease every day.

The time from when you take the first pill until you finish the pregnancy is usually between 24-48 hours and is determined by how you are instructed to use the pills.

You can become pregnant again within 2 weeks after the abortion. Your period usually returns in 4–6 weeks. The first period may be lighter or heavier than usual. A medical abortion usually does not affect future pregnancies.
